Duvets

The World Wide Recognition of Duvets

A duvet is a special type of bed furnishing. It is a soft bag which is used on the bed in the form of a blanket. A duvet is traditionally filled with either feathers or down, and in some cases they are even filled with a combination of both these materials. Hence these duvets are quite popular with the people who want both comfort and warmth with a dash of style.

Duvets were originally hand made in rural Europe. The rural people used the feathers of the Eider duck (which is known for its usefulness as an insulator) to fill them up. Duvet was mainly used in Northern Europe and Scandinavia as they were two extreme cold places on the earth, and it is still their most common form of bed covering. The late twentieth century discovered this special blanket and spread its popularity in the whole world.

Apart from being the most common form of bed furnishing in Europe, Duvets have gained recognition and usefulness all over the world. It is uncomplicated in deign, needs minimum amount of maintenance, and is highly comfortable. What is more, a duvet reduces the complexity of bed making and saves both time and effort on the part of the home maker because it is the sole bed covering instead of the combination of quilts, blankets, and sheets or other bed covers, which is traditionally used in many parts of the world. The cover is known as the duvet cover or a quilt cover/

Duvets are quite uncomplicated to make. It is traditionally filled up with downs or feathers or a combination of both. Nowadays, some modern manufacturers also fill the duvets with wool, silk or artificial fibers (such as polyester batting or other artificial material).

Different fills cost differently, and so duvets can be bought in a broad range of prices, from the most economical to the special branded ones. Due to its attractive looks and designs duvets are sometimes confused with comforters. The role of a comforter is primarily decorative as it is used on top of the traditional sheets and blankets; while duvets are used singly and used as in the form of a blanket hence they are more useful.

Australians have created a new name for duvets in the form of Doona. This name has been derived from a trademark brand Old Norse dunn which means "down feathersr". Though this name is still registered to the Tontine Company, the new name .Doona. has been established to describe a down quill or duvet. Originally Australia had a standard term -.continental quilt. to refer to the duvets, and this name is still used in some of its regions. But, doona is the more famous term for duvets.

In the United States the word duvets generally refers to comforter cover than the down blanket itself and this may raise a lot of confusion. Several large retailers also use the term duvets for the comforter cover on their brochures.
